Adopting A Dog

Our dogs are spayed or neutered, updated on vaccinations, kept on heartworm preventative, microchipped, and have a written profile to inform adopters about each dog.

Every re-homed shelter dog goes through a transition period that can cause heightened anxiety and stress.  Every dog's transition period will be different.  Help make your newly-adopted dog's transition a smooth one while also protecting your family and / or neighbors from anxiety-induced behavior (which could include growling, snapping, lunging).  FOHA provides tips and suggestions for a successful transition along with general guidelines for adopting a shelter dog.  To download FOHA's "Making the Successful Transition" in Word format,  <click here>.

Dogs of the Month: HERSCHELL & RAMONA

Our new year's resolution is to find a loving home!  Could it be yours?

The two lovely dogs pictured are Ramona (left) and Herschell (right).  They originally arrived at FOHA several years ago because they wouldn't hunt, and they were adopted to a loving home together.  Things were perfect... the two hounds had a wonderful family to call their own, kids to play with, and they thought that they would never be homeless again.  Unfortunately for them, the family decided to have more children, and found that it was too much work to care for a bunch of young kids and two dogs.  So, Herschell and Ramona found themselves back at FOHA, only this time, they were older and less likely to be adopted quickly.

Despite being housebroken, well-behaved, great with kids, and absolutely adorable with those big ears and huge grins, Herschell and Ramona have waited for a very long time to find a home.  To make matters worse, it was recently discovered that Ramona has cancer.  These dogs have so much love to give, and didn't ask for the life they were given.  They want to start off 2010 in a loving home.  If you would consider adopting these sweethearts, it will be a dream come true.

Adoption Campaign Dog: THUMPER

Thumper is a goofy boy with a name to match... when he gets excited, his tail goes thump, thump, thump!  He is sweet and friendly, and he can't wait to find a home of his own.  Thumper is loving with people and well-behaved in the house, but he can be a bit picky about his canine buddies.  Thumper was selected to be the next adoption campaign dog because he is a volunteer favorite, and because he has been overlooked for so long.  He just hopes that someone will give him the chance to show off what a wonderful dog he is, and will give him the home he deserves.  In return, he will be a loyal and faithful friend for life.
