In 2010, Friends launched a humane education program. Hugely successful, this program allows children to learn about responsible pet ownership in a fun, outdoor setting and earn a pet badge to boot! Broad activities include dog care, cat care, the cost of owning a pet, breed matching, medical care, nutrition and more. To date, more than 60 Girl Scouts and their leaders have visited the shelter to learn about responsible pet ownership and the enormous good work Friends does for animals. To be put on a waiting list for a future date or to find out more about this program, please email Wendy Loundermon at
